Volunteer Information
Women in Action is always seeking volunteers for their many running programs. Volunteers have the flexibility of designing their program, with the help of WIA staff, and tailoring it to their needs and their prior knowledge. Volunteering at WIA gives participants a first-hand look at a successful organization run purely by Tanzanian women. Unlike many other NGO’s in Tanzania, WIA understands the problems ailing its community because its members are a part of that community. WIA’s goal is to make every volunteer’s experience one to remember, so we strive to make sure that the volunteer becomes an intricate part of our organization.
Volunteers have the option of working within a single program or combining many of the programs together to experience everything that WIA has to offer. Although Women in Action does allow volunteers to work within any of their programs, there are some programs that rely heavily on volunteer participation.
The education programs, which include teaching in the WIA pre-school, tutoring in the after-school program and aiding the after-school counselor, rely heavily on volunteers to continue running. These programs are also a great opportunity to meet some amazing children who have been through very hard times and just need someone to care about them. (More information about our pre-school teacher volunteer opportunity can be found by following the link below.)
The Home Based Care program always needs volunteers. Within this program, volunteers are able to visit the homes of HIV positive and other sick patients along with the trained home based care workers. They are able to shadow the HBC worker, advise and counsel the patient and help teach the patient about nutrition.
Volunteers are also always needed in the Women Empowerment program. They help teach about HIV prevention, women and children’s rights, life skills and help with paralegal issues. Within this program it is always great to have volunteers from western countries, where women are already empowered, to show marginalized Tanzanian women where they should strive to be.
